10X10 (2018)
Film Review
By the Geezer of Oz
In a quiet town, where people seem to be living their very ordinary lives, things take a turn one seemingly normal day.
After carefully watching and following her, Lewis kidnaps Cathy while she is on the way to her car after a Yoga class. He brings her to his house only to lock her up in a 10X10 padded room.
It seems Lewis has very sinister intentions, but when Cathy tries to find out why this is happening and what Lewis wants from her, initially he asks for only one thing… her name.
10X10 is an all too familiar thriller that, while made competently, does not seems to bring anything new to the screen in a much overused storyline. After watching this film, I initially was not sure where I stood. While the credits rolled, I knew that I saw a film that was well produced and reasonably well acted and directed, yet left nothing memorable for me to take away post-viewing.
Luke Evans (The Raven, No One Lives, Fast & Furious 6,7,8, Dracula Untold, High-Rise, TV’s The Alienist) and Kelly Reilly (Eden Lake, Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2, Calvary, TV’s Black Box, True Detective, Britannia) put in above average performances, but it is too obvious where the story is headed and therefore, difficult to get too invested in the characters.
Director Suzi Ewing’s feature debut ultimately fails mainly in bringing to life a listless script that lacks originality and any substantial punch. While Ewing does a good enough job for a first attempt at a feature, this will not be one she will be remembered for.
Unoriginal and unnecessary. 5.5/10.
