Se7en Questions with Filmmaker

Bill Robertson

Who are some of the artists or some of the works that inspired you to get started in this field? Of today’s current artists, who do you draw inspiration from?
Star Wars, Tom & Jerry, The Dukes Of Hazzard, Chris Claremont/John Byrne (Uncanny X-Men), Van Halen.

Tarsem Singh, Joss Whedon, Sam Raimi.

What have thus far been some of the negatives of being an indie artist in your field?
No money, no opportunities for self-taught artists, no respect for or interest in indie artists’ work.

What have thus far been the positives of being an indie artist in your field?
Creating whatever I am able to without the need to conform to an investor’s uninformed whims or dictates.

What have been your favourite completed projects to work on up to this point? Can you tell us a little bit about them?
Brown Coat – an album I played drums on and co-created based on Joss Whedon’s Firefly/Serenity.
CCAB Peak – a metal album I played drums on.

The Perfect House – a feature horror film I acted in and was an Associate Producer and promoter for.
From My Shelf Books vs. The Evil Empire – a web series I wrote and directed.
Friday The 13th Fan Film – a short film I directed and edited.

What projects are you currently working on or have planned for the near future?
Modern Family spec script.

Where do you see yourself in a few years and what would it take for you to consider your career a success?
In a video production job. Or better yet, a screenwriting job for a sitcom. Just  being able to pay the bills with my (artistic) work instead of a factory or construction punching-a-timeclock-job would be all it would take to satisfy me.

If you couldn’t do this anymore, what career path do you think you would have followed and why?
I would just give up and work my life away hidden in a factory somewhere.
