Who are some of the artists or some of the works that inspired you to get started in this field? Of today’s current artists, who do you draw inspiration from?
I always loved fantastic / horror movies, big or low budget, it doesn’t really matter. I think this is a genre where you can be really creative, with no bondaries. An inspiration for The Darkest was The Blair Witch Project, but I didn’t want to make a found footage type of movie. I love supernatural movies, involving a ghost or a fantastic creature like The Sixth Sense or The Others. I’m also a lot into physics (quantum physics and astro physics), and you’ll understand that by watching the movie!
What have thus far been some of the negatives of being an indie artist in your field?
I actually love being an independent filmmaker, even though I’d love to have more money to shoot. But having a low budget doesn’t mean your movie is going to be bad, you just have to be creative and love your project and do your best! The Darkest was shot in eight days which is pretty quick but the entire crew was really passionate about making the movie, that is what matters the most, I think.
What have thus far been the positives of being an indie artist in your field?
First, no concession. That is the key to make a good movie. Take an idea and develop it as much as you like, with no one telling you what to do or not to do. Being independent means that you make the movie you want to make. It becomes very much personal and I truely believe that shows in those kinds of productions.
What have been your favorite completed projects to work on up to this point? Can you tell us a little bit about them?
The Darkest is my sixth feature film. All are independent productions. The Darkest has been really intense to make. We were shooting in the wild from 10PM to 5AM during one entire week. We had rain, wind and a lot of elements that you have to break through to shoot, but we all had a really good time making this movie.
More recently I’ve shot a short movie in Tokyo, Shibari, which has been a really different but intense experiment.
What projects are you currently working on or have planned for the near future?
This summer (2018) I’ll shoot my next feature film in Portland, Oregon. We are currently working on pre-production: casting, scheduling and locations. It is called The Healer (a working title) and it is a about a French girl working in Portland having violent nightmares. She’ll be introduced in a group (a sort of a cult) where the healer is having very strange ways to heal people…
Where do you see yourself in a few years and what would it take for you to consider your career a success?
The Darkest will hopefully be released in French movie theatres next year. This is already a great success. In the future, I wish my movies will get more famous and that I’ll be able to have more money to shoot. I have several projects that need considerable budgets. I’m currently working on that. But I want to keep on shooting independent movies, that’s truely what I like about the cinema industry.
If you couldn’t do this anymore, what career path do you think you would have followed and why?
I’d probably raise llamas in the Alps. Oh, I’m also a writer and a musician. So who knows, maybe I’ll get back to songs writing some day 😉
