Hi everyone! And welcome to MyIndie Review Vlog, the show that gives you spoiler-free reviews of indie films. My name is Asaf Angel from MyIndie Productions and today I’ll be reviewing 2017’s short horror drama, For Her, by UK Indie filmmaker Daniel Mark Young.

The story follows young couple, Jonathan and Elizabeth, portrayed by Derek Nelson and Kattreya Scheurer-Smith.

Jonathan and Elizabeth are introduced to us as a passionate couple who are very much in love. At first, it seems Elizabeth is excited to keep her man happy, and Jonathan in return appreciates everything about her.

After an exposition that gives an impression that all is sunshine and rainbows, we quickly realize that the love birds have a strange dynamic going on between them. Their love is burdened with co-dependency. As it feels like Jonathan is all too aware that Elizabeth is out of his league, it appears he’s taken upon himself to be somewhat of a caretaker for her when she is moody/under the weather. Jonathan does house chores, he nurses Elizabeth when she’s really not feeling well and is generally very understanding of her mood swings. Pretty much unconditionally devoted.

In subtext, It feels the film encapsulates the cycle of good and bad times that is part of any relationship in its 20-minute runtime. Even though things aren’t really as they seem, For Her presents a common scenario in what can be perceived as a relationship of mutual exploitation.

The film’s premise is fairly familiar, of course it is still a worthy one to tackle. It kind of makes me think about relationships in general. What makes them last? Is it Love? Is it commitment? Is it both? I don’t know. It’s just interesting to think about.

To sum up, even though there are some elements in the plot and certain filmmaking decisions that I did not quite agree with, fact remains, filmmaker Daniel Mark Young tackled a subject that can relate to anyone who’s ever been in a roller-coaster relationship. The production value is decent, the special effects are excellent and the film serves its premise rather well.

For Her gets a 6.5/10 on the Look At Me, I’m a Film Critic scale!
