Film Review

By the Geezer of Oz

“When a college girl who is alone on campus over the Thanksgiving break is targeted by a group of outcasts, she must conquer her deepest fears to outwit them and fight back.” (IMDb)

In short, this is a very good, intense horror-thriller with a premise in somewhat similar vein to The Strangers (2008). It keeps you engaged pretty much throughout. The first twenty minutes or so are exposition and a little slow, but then it takes off and does not let go until the end.

I generally prefer it when films keep running time below ninety minutes and it really works to great effect in this one. Haley Bennett (The Haunting of Molly Hartley, The Hole, The Equalizer, Hardcore Henry, The Girl on the Train), is very good in the lead role and Ashley Greene (the Twilight series, Summer’s Moon, The Apparition, Burying the Ex, TV’s Rogue) does the sinister character to great effect. There are also appearances by Lucas Till (The X-Men series, Dance of the Dead, Laid to Rest, All Superheroes Must Die, Stoker, The Disappointments Room, Monster Trucks) Chris Coy (Hostel: Part III, Deliver Us from Evil, The Barber, TV’s True Blood, The Walking Dead and Banshee) Mike Seal (Armed Response, TV’s The Walking Dead), James Ransone (Ken Park, Inside Man, Prom Night, The Son of No One, Sinister 1&2, Tangerine, Mr. Right, TV’s The Wire, Treme, Low Winter Son and Generation Kill) and Mathew St. Patrick (TV’s Six Feet Under and Sons of Anarchy, War, Alien Raiders) in supporting roles.

Director Oliver Blackburn continues to impress and delivers on the promise of his previous release, Donkey Punch (2008).

I didn’t expect much from this one so it was a welcome, pleasant surprise.

Recommended. 7/10.
