May The Schlock Be With You

It’s been widely reported that during the current pandemic indie filmmakers have somewhat of an advantage when compared to their Hollywood counterparts. With productions shot on a shoestring budget and guerrilla filmmaking, indies can still find ways to keep making films while most Hollywood productions are being shut down due to the huge investment and ever increasing risk, further magnified by the shutdown of movie theatres.

Australian indie filmmaker, David Black, is taking full advantage of this. To Black, this pandemic is but a bump in the road as far as continuing to release short films and even completing a feature during the current restrictions. David recently completed five shorts, all since the CoronaVirus broke out. Some were shot before the pandemic, some during, but post-production on all was finalised in the past three months. Black released the following on his YouTube channel for free viewing: Babble On, Babylon, Quest of Questions, Blargenfloof and the Seventh Golden Shamrock, Sinister Symbiosis and Klink, Klunk, Klonk.

The above mentioned feature is none other than the schlock-filled affair that is Toxic Alien Zombie Babes From Outer Space. Black (writer, producer and co-star) is again teaming up with skilled filmmaker, Gerardo Chierchia (director), to release a this crazy feature-length sci-fi/horror.

Melbourne, where Black and Chierchia reside, is currently on Stage 3 lockdown restrictions, so while it is possible to shoot some footage, there are many challenges as well. David has informed us that they have already thought of clever ways to achieve high-level results even under these current conditions, by the use green screen, SFX and other tricks that the guys wish to keep secret until after the film’s released.

Toxic Alien Zombie Babes From Outer Space is a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi/horror that pays homage to cult classics from the distant past, including War of the Worlds, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, so expect the schlock to flow freely. Black originally planned to include cameo-type appearances throughout the film by various stars of B-grade productions from the past, but none were interested in taking part in the project.

Those joining Black in the film’s ensemble cast are Vixey Teh (Quest of Questions, Blargenfloof and the Seventh Golden Shamrock, Regression Transgression, The Road to Hell is Still Undefined) as our Toxic Alien Zombie Babe, Melanie Kuhn (The Road to Hell is Still Undefined) as Sgt. Harper, Natasha Mace, who previously helmed as Cinematographer on Sinister Symbiosis and Babble On Babylon, will now be stepping in front of the camera, Anastasia C. Kouloukas (Sinister Symobiosis, Parental Duties) and Glen Cook (Babble on Babylon, Hamlet for the Fireys).

The enthusiasm of the cast makes up for any rejections Black may have received from more established stars. Teh stated “this is such a fantastic concept, in a time of isolation; to bring creatives together across the globe, while everyone is safely, socially distanced, through the magic of film.”

Kuhn echoed those sentiments: “I love the idea of this being a combined effort with participants from across the globe. I think it’s a wonderful chance for us creatives to pool our efforts and unite to create something special.”

Mace went on to say “this has been quite a stressful time for everyone and David’s films are always a lot of fun. He has a wonderfully quirky sense of humour which really shines through in the script for Toxic Alien Zombie Babes. It’s bound to a delight for the whole family (assuming of course you’re a family of deranged lunatics).”

Cook added “The whole idea sounds so fun and very unique and I’m quite excited to see how things turn out in a unique and special way.”

Director Gerardo Chierchia said, “When David Black mentioned this project to me, I immediately saw the finished film in my head… during this period of covid-19 many have lost their jobs, including me… for this reason I looked for something to commit to and keep myself creative… I know David and his way of organizing and producing the films… it’s a great adventure but with the help of many around the world… I’m sure the film will be interesting… this period will be a time we will never forget.”

Sounds like a schlocky good time to us! Stay tuned for updates…
