Alfred J Hemlock
Written Review
Hi everyone! Welcome to MyIndie Review Vlog. The show that gives you spoiler-free reviews of Indie films.
My name is Asaf Angel from MyIndie Productions and today I’d like to talk to you about the 2017 Short film Alfred J Hemlock.
Directed by Australian filmmaker Edward Lyons who also co-wrote and co-produced the film with Melissa Lyons.
The story follows a young woman by the name of Emily, played by Renaye Loryman who we find at a pretty low point in her life, as she is being nastily dumped by her boyfriend, Guy, played by Christian Charisiou.
As he drives off, Guy leaves her sitting on the asphalt in a creepy alley in the middle of the night. Emily sits and cries in despair while out of nowhere, a deviant and mysterious Alfred J Hemlock appears in a skillful performance by actor Tristan McKinnon.
Hemlock chases after a frightened Emily, imploring her to submit to her depression and let him put her out of her misery.
Hemlock, somewhat reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow, takes the viewer through a disturbingly amusing theme-park ride, while young Emily quickly finds out that as bad as she thought her night was panning out, it was about to get a whole lot worse.
It seems that the talented and meticulous Lyons, has a taste for the Fantastic and Theatrical. The cinematography and production value are exemplary. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the film, as it also reminded me of Tim Berton’s Beetlejuice, which happens to be the first film I ever went to see on the big screen some 30 years ago.
Alfred J Hemlock is Lyons’ sixth and most recent project. After a ridiculously successful festival run, the film was impressively selected to 55 festivals thus far, got 39 nominations and won 46 awards!
I’d love to see more of this horrifyingly fascinating Hemlock, and apparently, I might get a chance!
On March 9 of this year, while attending MonsterFest in Sydney, Australia, Edward and Melissa Lyons announced that Alfred J Hemlock will soon become a feature film.
On behalf of MyIndie Productions: Best of luck to Team Lyons… or Team Hemlock!
To sum up, this is a great, well executed and entertaining film.
Alfred J Hemlock gets an 8/10 on the Look At Me, I’m a Film Critic scale!
The film is currently still on the festival circuit, so keep an eye out for the next festival near you and search out Alfred J Hemlock.
Until next time, keep supporting Indie Film. My name is Asaf Angel and thanks for tuning into MyIndie Review vlog.
