Happy Death Day (2017)
Film Review
By the Geezer of Oz
“A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer’s identity.” (IMDb)
I must admit that upon initial viewing, this Slasher version of Groundhog Day left me at somewhat of a loss. While this film is clearly B-Grade horror for the Y Generation and simply steals the Groundhog Day premise and places it in a College Slasher film, it is still somewhat… well… endearing. In its favour, it seems that the film is very self-aware and therefore most of the themes, lines and other exaggerations are mainly tongue-in-cheek and should be judged as such.
The acting, directing, cinematography and overall production value are on par with any box office teenage flick released these days, kind of like a lesser distant cousin of the Scream franchise. Yet, at the end I still somehow found the main character Tree, Jessica Rothe (Parallels, Wolves, The Tribe, La La Land) to go through a very likeable transition. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Rothe pop up in quite a few films over the next few years, especially judging the massive success of this indie horror at the box office.
Overall, while I’m not a huge fan of this type of film, director Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) does a credible job here and this teen horror-comedy-romance is one of the better offerings of the sub-genre.
Entertaining. 6.5/10.
