Film Review

By the Geezer of Oz

“Six preadolescent girls face a night of terror when the compulsive addiction of an online social media game turns a moment of cyber bullying into a night of insanity.” (IMDb)

Not even sure how to approach this one…
This film wants so bad to be edgy and poignant, but ends up being a total, boring mess. Even though it attempts to tackle such topics as bullying, our dependence on technology, social status and umm… parenting, it ends up extremely shallow and with no redeeming value whatsoever.

The script leaves you wondering which character you were supposed to root for and whether or not you should be upset that some have been killed off or that anyone survives. There is little to no subtext, as everything lays poorly on the surface, and the supposed “twist” when finding out who is responsible for the killings, leaves you with your mouth wide open… only to let out a yawn.

I’m generally all for trying to make decent cinema, even when it is less than perfect, but in this case… a generous 4/10.

Oh yeah, aside for a bunch of 12 year-old girls, there are appearances by Chloe Sevigny, Timothy Hutton, Balthazar Getty, Natasha Lyonne and Taryn Manning.
