A Guidebook To Killing Your Ex

Written Review

Hi eveybody! Welcome to the very first episode of MyIndie Review Vlog, the show the gives you spoiler-free reviews of indie films. My name is Asaf Angel and today I’d like to discuss 2016’s A Guidebook to Killing Your Exdirected by Hungarian indie filmmaker József Gallai, who also wrote and produced it.

Thank you to József, who was kind enough to send us a link to view the film!

A Guidebook to Killing Your Ex is a low budget, Found Footage-style thriller, József’s fourth project within this sub-genre.

It follows a severely disturbed individual who calls himself John Doe played by Balázs Szitás. John documents his plot to kill his ex-girlfriend, played by Tímea Virga and her fiancé, played by Tamás Szilágyi.

John documents his journey in the form of a video tutorial. He speaks to the camera, sharing a detailed method on how to stalk and execute revenge on one’s ex.

We don’t have any figures on it, but it looks as though the film was made with an ultra-low budget. Having been involved with quite a few indie low budget productions myself, I look at reviewing such films using a somewhat different scale and always make it a point to remember that these films were made with such little means and huge amounts of effort. Completing a feature film with few resources is an accomplishment all on its own and József needs to be commended for such an achievement.

The film is said to have been shot during ten days with a skeleton crew and it has run time of approximately 70 minutes.

Despite its limited resources, the story takes place in various locations in Hungary, as well as footage added from as far as Japan. That shows outstanding diligence. The film also refrains from using a score almost all the way through, which shows courage and sticking with the style intended.

Don’t get me wrong, this film does have its share of issues, but most are forgivable due to the budgetary constraints.

To sum up, the conclusion I came to after watching A Guidebook to Killing Your Ex is that director József Gallai has got an flair for storytelling, and personally, I can’t wait to see what he releases next.

A Guidebook to Killing Your Ex gets a 7/10 on the Look at Me I’m a Film Critic Scale!

Feel free to check it out for yourselves. The film is available on Amazon.

József’s Indiegogo Campaign for his upcoming film: Spirits In The Dark.

Until next time, keep supporting Indie Film and thanks for tuning in to MyIndie Review Vlog.
