Innocent, free-spirited Payton is forced to take a job in Louisville to help stave off foreclosure on her aunt’s farmhouse. She meets Curtis, an intelligent, outspoken black man who opens her up to ideals and views denied by her sheltered upbringing. When the nature of their relationship is exposed to her intolerant, anti-miscegenistic family, tensions bring out the worst in everyone.
