Raw (2016)
Film Review
By the Geezer of Oz
“When a young vegetarian undergoes a carnivorous hazing ritual at vet school, an unbidden taste for meat begins to grow in her.” (IMDb)
While this film is visually impressive, sexual and stylish, it still left me somewhat puzzled. It is an atmospheric piece, rich is symbolism that goes beyond the story on the surface, but I still felt the storyline itself was not without its problems.
Director Julia Ducournau shows her considerable talent here and I’m sure we will hear more from her again soon. Garance Marillier and Ella Rumpf give us interesting and charismatic performances as the two sisters at the centre of this bizarre story.
I won’t go into it for fear of spoiling, I’ll just say that for all its issues, I still felt there was more positive than negative and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.
Original and stylish. 7/10.
