The Blackcoat‘s Daughter (2015)
Film Review
By the Geezer of Oz
“Two girls must battle a mysterious evil force when they get left behind at their boarding school over winter break.” (lMDb)
Aesthetically captivating and adorned with a very effective, eerie soundtrack, this film had me feeling uneasy (in the best of ways) throughout most of it.
Emma Roberts (Scream 4, TV’s Scream Queens, American Horror Story), Kiernan Shipka (Carriers, TV’s The Legend of Korra, Man Men) and Lucy Boynton (I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Don’t Knock Twice, Murder on the Orient Express 2017) are eerily effective in this underrated piece as the three girls the story revolves around.
James Remar (The Warriors, 48 Hrs., Hellraiser: Inferno, The Unborn, Horns, TV’s Dexter) and Lauren Holly (The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Dumb and Dumber, Dead Shack, TV’s NCIS) appear in small roles but are yet creepy enough (and I say that as a positive) to be remembered.
Oz Perkins (I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House) exercises patience and a steady hand rarely seen from a first time director.
Although when the credits ran, I felt that it didn’t quite reach its full potential, I still think it was a pleasant surprise and a well above average horror thriller that leaves you wanting more.
I can best describe it as that feeling you get when your ears start ringing completely out of nowhere and you still can’t shake the feeling long after the ringing is long gone.
Highly recommended. 7.5/10.
