The Disappointments Room (2016)

Film Review

By the Geezer of Oz

“A mother and her young son release unimaginable horrors from the attic of their rural dream home.” (IMDb)

A nice, if unoriginal idea, that I was hopeful would be saved by high production value and half-decent actors and director, but it was not to be.

D.J. Caruso (The Salton Sea, Disturbia, Eagle Eye, I Am Number Four, XxX: Return of Xander Cage) continues an uneven parade of directorial efforts (or lack thereof) with this mundane piece.

Kate Beckinsale (Van Helsing, Vacancy, Whiteout, The Underworld films series), Gerald McRaney (The Neverending Story, The A-Team, TV’s Simon & Simon, Deadwood, Jericho, Longmire, 24: Legacy and House of Cards), Lucas Till (The X-Men series, Dance of the Dead, Laid to Rest, All Superheroes Must Die, Stoker, Kristy, Monster Trucks) and Celia Weston (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Hulk, The Village, The Invasion, The Box, After.Life) are just not quite enough to bring this film some much needed credibility.

This film walks the ‘Average’ line and does not budge. It lacks originality and is not exceptional in any way and thus made absolutely no real positive impression on me. It simply plays it too safe and thus in many ways, stays true to its title.

It’s not bad, it’s not good, it just is… Which is not good enough in my book, not even close. 5/10.
