The Girl with all the Gifts (2016)

Film Review

By the Geezer of Oz

“A scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie.” (IMDB)

A somewhat different take on the zombie apocalyptic horror sub-genre. This film initially looked very promising, as possibly one of horror’s most anticipated releases of last year.

The story ends up somewhat cliche’ in parts, albeit with some interesting plot angles not quite seen before. It then drifts off into the familiar, progresses into an interesting and original sub-plot and then… kind of fizzles out into quite a standard indie horror film.

Appearances by Paddy Considine, Gemma Arterton and Glenn Close might excite some but on the whole, while possessing a somewhat original twist on the genre, this film ultimately fails to reach expectations. However, still a very well made, entertaining film. 6.5/10.
