Welcome everyone, to MyIndie Review Vlog! I am Asaf Angel from MyIndie Productions, and on today’s episode, I’ll be tackling the 2019 horror feature The Obsessed, a.k.a. The Best of Me, due for a 2020 release by TetroVideo.

The film was written by Andrea Cavaletto, Jacopo Tomassini, Iva Cakalli, with story by MyIndie featured artist, highly acclaimed Italian extreme filmmaker Domiziano Cristopharo. It was made by Bad Trip Bros, an Albanian extreme horror & sci-fi production company working in co-operation with Italian filmmakers as a film making factory, or collective. The Obsessed was a collaboration comprised of the team of Jacopo Tomassini, Iva Cakalli, Domiziano Cristopharo and additional scenes created by Elisa Carrera Fumagalli and Francesco Foletto.

Thank you, TetroVideo for sharing your film with us.

As mentioned in previous episodes, MyIndie Review Vlog is sponsored by Angerman Distribution, a distribution company devoted to helping independent filmmakers from all around the world get their work out to the viewing public. So thank you, AngerMan, for everything…

Ricardo, portrayed by Jacopo Tomassini is a young, disheveled, drug-addled man, who is uncontrollably obsessed with Eva, a famous singer, played by Elisa Carrera Fumagalli.

Tomassini pretty much carries the weight of the story on his shoulders in a very graphic display, designed to depict a troubled man’s downward spiral into, and past, insanity.

In a period of a few days, Ricardo experiences a series of horrific hallucinations, self-mutilation, surreal mutations, conversations with ghoulish creatures and more. His drug habit, slowly but surely, deteriorating his mental state.

The film is inspired by the story of Ricardo López, a.k.a The Björk Stalker, a Uruguayan-American who attempted to murder Icelandic musician Björk back in September of 1996.

The visual language in The Obsessed is heavily loaded with surreal spectacles revolving Tomassini’s character, as if the story offers a vivid experience, prompted by the decaying psyche of an extremely mentally burdened individual.

The story holds very well for its purpose. The film sports some unique and visually unusual scenes. Production value is very high. Cinematography by Cristopharo is loaded with breathtakingly beautiful shots and compositions. Set design was extremely impressive and rich in details. It is apparent that great effort went into practical and special FX and Makeup, created by Tomassini himself, as well as Iva Cakali and Domiziano. The score by Antony Coia, with additional songs by Susan DiBona, was beautiful and blends well with the atmosphere of the film.

All in all, an interesting take on a tragic story, which needed to be told. It is also inspiring to see a group of artists, setting egos aside and collaborating on a project, producing some fine results in the name of art.

The Obsessed scores 8/10 on the Look at Me, I’m a Film Critic scale!

As mentioned earlier, the film is soon to be released by TetroVideo, so stay tuned for further updates. Link to TetroVideo website included.

Keep in mind, this is an extremely graphic film, as fitting TetroVideo, so viewer discretion is advised.
