The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

Film Review

By the Geezer of Oz

“In an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer’s work.” (IMDb)

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a horror-thriller-mystery-mockumentary that is very disturbing and quite well done.

It mostly uses the found footage technique, attempting to keep some viewers unsure as to whether or not this was, indeed based on a true story. Although, to some people ‘in the know’, appearances by certain actors kind of give that away. Those include Stacy Chbosky (Quarantine, Devil),  Ivar Brogger (Annabelle, The Atticus Institute, Martyrs 2015) and Iris Bahr (Fair Game, The Last Exorcism).

Director John Erick Dowdle does a fine, inventive job on this low budget affair. He later followed this outing with films you might be more familiar with, like Quarantine, Devil, As Above So Below and No Escape.

Although not an easy viewing, this film improves as it progresses and the payoff is substantial enough. l recommend giving this one an attentive go.

A solid 7/10.
