Film Review

By the Geezer of Oz

“XX is a new horror anthology with a gender twist – all segments will be helmed by female directors and will star female leads. The directors have been given free creative rein within budget and time constraints, but all of the segments themselves will involve the horror genre.” (IMDb)

While I applaud efforts at reducing the disparity between male and female creators in the industry, I truly don’t believe this anthology did the cause much good.

While generally interesting enough and well produced, I felt as though the stories were largely uneven and not interesting enough. I was particularly excited upon hearing that one of the segments was to be directed by Karyn Kusama (The Invitation), but it ultimately didn’t quite live up to the hype. Roxanne Benjamin, who in 2015 took part in directing another anthology, the superior Southbound, along with singer-songwriter St. Vincent, and Jovanka Vukovick rounded out the directing foursome.

Unfortunately, the film did not wow me in any way as I expected a more resounding statement and it did not deliver. However, the stories were well produced and above average in most departments. Good, but not great. 6/10.
